Cub Scout Pack 429

Wolf Cub Scouts are 8 years old when they join Pack 429 and become Bear Cub Scouts when they turn 9 years old. They work with their parents and den leaders to complete activities to earn their respective badges. When they turn 10 they become a WEBELOS Cub Scout and work mostly with their den leader to complete the requirements needed to earn their WEBELOS badge and ARROW OF LIGHT badge (the highest honor in Cub Scouts and only patch that can be worn on the Boy Scout Uniform).

The jungle is a fun place for boys to explore the exciting world outside their backyards.

Parents or guardians of WOLF Cubs are encouraged to work on additional achievements and electives that support this theme, such as:

Achievement 4d, Know Your Home and Community: Boys can practice turning off lights and water when leaving home.

Elective 13, Birds: Boys can learn about and care for birds in their local area.
Conservation and Leave No Trace awards: Completing Achievement 7 is part of earning the Cub Scout World Conservations Award and Cub Scouting's Leave No Trace Awareness Award. We have wonderful birds to see and learn about here in our town and in Cibola Wildlife Refuge.

BEAR Cubs
The history of the Cub Scout story highlights Baloo, the wise old brown bear who taught the wolf cubs the Law of the Pack. The Bear cubs have the opportunity to work on Achievements 3f, 5c, 9e, 15a, and 16c.

The parents of the BEAR Cubs are encourage to work on these additional achievements and elective: Achievement 8b, The Past is Exciting and Important: Cub Scouts can investigate how Cub Scouting has changed over the years. Achievement 17d, Information, Please: Boys can use a computer to get information on different animals that may be threatened. Elective 14a, Landscaping: Fall cleanup at a local church or in public areas is a good Cub Scout project.

In September, the WEBELOS attended the court house and practiced raising and lowering the AMERICAN FLAG at Ruth Brown Elementary school for their CITIZEN Badge. The Citizen badge is one of the required badges to earn their WEBELOS badge!

Gum Gallery Tour in September

School and weekly den meetings have begun again. October is here and so is the cool weather! Yeah to that! September's Cub Scouting theme was Cub Scout Pockets. The scouts made crafts, pet rocks, pocket holder of emergency phone numbers and shared their own collections and visited the largest chewing gum collection, probably in the world! The Gum Gallery is in Quartzsite, Arizona and is collected by Joanne Brunet. She has been collecting gum since the 1940's and the Scouts loved it!

Service, hotdogs, warm hearts, clean stones!

Lots has happened in scouting since last blog. The boys made candy cane candles, homemade puzzles, celebrated Christmas and New Year's with their families! and started the New Year with service.
We made our second trip to work on the Blythe Cemetery to trim the headstones that were over grown with grass and buried in goffer dirt hills and covered in yellow and brown leaves from off the mulberry trees. The trees are mostly bare now and provide little shade for the stones and their visitors. It was a warm clear day. We had a great turnout and finished the section in the middle from the VFW pole to the south building. Some of the boys even got to relax in a very large pile of leaves they had raked together!

We had a special treat provided by the Blythe Auto owners! Thanks to Bob Summers from Blythe Auto. Claire, Richard Phipps, and Jared John. Bob cooked us Hot Dogs with all the trimmings after the crew worked! Thank you Blythe Auto! Thank you goes out to the families and friends of Cub Scout Pack 429 and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Blythe Ward. We enjoyed the exercise and it felt good to serve our community!

Welcome to Pack 429 blog

We started this to communicate with pictures and updates of our pack activities. Please feel free to comment and add whatever is pack related.

Our first service project of the school year was started on Saturday, December 6, 2008. We had over 30 people serve the Blythe Cemetery that day by blowing lawn clippings and leaves; clearing old leaves and brush from the parking lot area and grave sites areas. The men trimmed up the markers and head stones with their electric weed trimmers. I, didn't even know those corner markers existed! Now, every one will be able to see where their loved ones were buried and or what plots they purchased.

We completed the north side of the cemetery and it looked great when we were done that day! It was so successful and fulfilling we started on the north end of the south side of the cemetery and found more work to be done. We cleared tons of fallen leaves from the big beautiful mullberry trees and found more loved ones hiding underneath. We were ending our time there for the day and had a desire to come back and finish the job another day.

We will start on the south side the next time.

You may ask, when is the next time? It is going to happen on Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

We need your help again. There will be reminders and sign ups for equipment going around in scout meetings. We would like to see a lot more electric weed wackers (trimmers) so we can focus on clearing the headstones and the children will clear off the debris after it is trimmed and then if we have time we will rake the leaves too. There will definately be lots of leaves and lots to do, so, tell all your friends and all the scouts who need service time about the 17th of January 2009! There will be more information coming via email and this blog and flyers and sign ups. Please watch out for them and if you don't see them ask Sister Dean.

If you have any questions please call our Cub Scout Pack Service Project Coordinator, Alice Dean at 760-921-2936 or on her cell phone 760-972-8658.
